Always Welcome
Hotel Utse - Sleeping with History
Utse was first opened in 1971 by Ugen Tsering and his wife, Diki, as the first Tibetan restaurant in Thamel. It soon became so popular that it helped develop Thamel into the major tourist area it became.
Utse restaurant still serves Tibetan dishes with recipes that have been handed down generations.
Accommodation
Utse Restaurant
Utse was an Idea that was born more than 40 years ago.
It was to serve Delicious yet simple food at standard prices in a great ambience.
Our chefs from the Himalayan regions use original recipes handed down from generations. We source most of our spices locally and our vegetables, fruits and meats are sourced from local farmers and vendors.
Our ambience is inspired mainly by Tibetan tradition and culture. It provides an escape from the bustling streets of Thamel.

I stayed at Utse Hotel for five weeks while on a university placement in Kathmandu. I travelled elsewhere in Nepal before hand and this was easily the best hotel I stayed in. The staff were so kind and accommodating, the rooms were always clean and spacious with the added bonus of a separate shower recess. The food at the restaurant is also delicious. The staff could never do enough for you and are like a family.
I felt so welcomed at Hotel Utse and will definitely be back one day!

Stayed at Utse for a few nights while on expedition in Nepal and had a lovely stay, the staff were friendly and helpful and couldn’t do enough for us. The restaurant attached is very nice as well, would definitely stay again

Wonderful service and a lovely stay
Really fantastic and helpful staff who went out of their for us. Simple, comfortable room and not noisy even though it’s right in the heart of Thamel. Delicious food in quiet, unfussy restaurant at a v good value. Highly recommend

I did three months in Nepal in 2010, and was staying in a small village doing research for the majority of the time however when I was in Kathmandu I stayed at the Utse, it was a beautiful place and a great place to rewind and relax. The food was excellent and the price was excellent. Everything was freshly made and I especially enjoyed the location and roof top garden, its a tranquil setting and I am looking forward to returning in April 2012.
I love Utse….everyone there is fabulous; it always feels like coming home to family when I stay there! Planning to return in April and am looking forward to seeing my friends at Utse once again.
